Lithium Phosphate
Lithium phosphate has the chemical formula Li3PO4, consists of a white crystalline powder, and is hardly soluble in water but soluble in dilute acid. Lithium phosphate can be used as a catalysts, lubricants, color phosphors and in special glass. CAS No.: 10377-52-3
Li₃PO₄ is one of the most widely studied phosphate-based materials in lithium battery research, valued for its chemical stability, non-toxicity, and good compatibility with both oxide cathodes and Li-metal anodes.
Li₃PO₄ is a key component of the LISICON (Lithium Super Ionic Conductor) family of solid electrolytes. Doped variants (e.g., Li₃.₅Si₀.₅P₀.₅O₄) show significantly enhanced Li⁺ ionic conductivity compared to pure Li₃PO₄, making them candidates for all-solid-state batteries.
It is applied as a thin protective coating material on cathode particles (NMC, LCO, LMO, etc.) ; and it is also applied as coating materials on graphite, silicon and Li-metal anodes.
Li₃PO₄ can form in situ as a beneficial SEI/CEI component during cycling when phosphate-containing additives are present in solid electrolyte design. It contributes to form high mechanical modulus to resist dendrite penetration, bringing good Li⁺ conductivity across the interface and chemical stability against both electrode and electrolyte.
In aqueous electrolyte systems, Li₃PO₄ acts as a buffer to stabilize pH and suppress water decomposition, widening the electrochemical stability window.
Li₃PO₄ serves as both a lithium source and a phosphorus source (precursor) in solid-state or hydrothermal synthesis routes for LiFePO₄ cathode material.
Poworks provides battery-grade lithium phosphate throughout the year.
